First Rate Training Services:

Providing Temporary Placements for Employers

Program Overview

In working with local employers since 1990, we’ve received much feedback as to what works and what doesn’t work for businesses.
One of the things we’ve heard is that temporary labour can work for employers and also employees, for a variety of reasons.

First Rate Training is a pilot project funded by Alberta Employment & Immigration (AEI) and Alberta Seniors and Community Supports (AISH Program). Our focus is to develop 10-15 work-sites in such a way that participating employers become known as an Employer of Choice.

The employer commits to the program for a minimum of four months, and will be provided the opportunity to access brief training and development services that will contribute to the advancement of a healthy work environment.

The Work

Participating employers agree to provide job opportunities that are anticipated to be entry-level laboring or service positions that can assist workers in the development of general values, attitudes and behaviors appropriate for the work environment.

The jobs need to be designed to accommodate several employees entering and exiting one position over the duration of the project. Sometimes employers select a position that has a high turn-over rate (in this sense, it has become a “temporary” position, already!), or the employer identifies several projects that need to be completed (e.g., take inventory, paint the fence, archive old files). This provides the opportunity for the employer/employee (s) to “test” the position as well as the employee’s existing/necessary skills.

The Services

In addition to the temporary placement program, and as part of this package, we target four elements of a healthy work environment: Team Building, Ergonomics, Nutrition and Cultural Openness to keeping and actively seeking to hire employees with disabilities. These elements are facilitated through several workshops with the expense covered through the Alberta government.

SESSION 1: STRENGTH BUILDING FOR YOUR TEAM

SESSION 2: EAT RIGHT, WORK BETTER (AND PLAY BETTER, TOO!)

SESSION 3: WORK-STATION ERGONOMIC ASSESSMENT

SESSION 4 & 5: WORKING WELL WITH DISABILITY IN THE WORKPLACE

The Workers

This project is aimed at creating   first-rate work environments that place   a priority on hiring people with disabilities in temporary “training” positions.

Temporary work is being targeted for two reasons: (1) This has been identified in the community as a critical need area for workers, and (2) also identified is a group of clients who either prefer temporary work as it’s viewed as less intimidating due to the short-term commitment and/or it may be more manageable with the cyclical nature of his/her illness. For clients unsure of their own work readiness, temporary work is an excellent way for them/the employer to test their employment readiness.
